Blog: I don’t understand how blogs work for promoting a company?

I see adds wanting blog writers to write blogs for companies. I hear marketing strategies using blogs, but I don’t get the concept. I see how one can write a blog somewhere, but how does that get to the people who buy the product? Ads and banners are placed on busy pages where millions of people will see it, but a blog is just a post, like a journal, hidden away on some web page. How does that help promote a business?
